Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am building and just can’t afford a complete system – can I just put in the pipes for now and buy the vacuum unit and hoses later?

A: Yes, we call this a Rough-in Only. For a minimal cost we can drop the pipes to the basement or utility area, then in the future you can complete the system.

Q: Do you have to install my VACUFLO Central Vacuum System, or can I do it myself?

A: We have ready-made Do-It-Yourself kits, which include all the fittings, pipe, wire, glue, and instructions necessary to install the system. The unit and accessories can be bought along with the equipment for a complete system purchase.

Q: How long does it take to install a VACUFLO Central Vacuum System?

A: Most installations are completed in a day or less, depending on the amount of work required to install the system. If you are going to install the system yourself, plan on a weekend.

Q: Is it possible to install a VACUFLO central vacuum system in my home after it has already been built?

A: Absolutely! At C.J. Miller, we specialize in existing home installations, termed a “retrofit.”

Q: Will there be any damage to my walls?

A: Typically not. 99% of our installations have accessible areas from the basement, crawlspace, attic, or unfinished portions of the home. Very rarely is it necessary to cut into your drywall or plaster to run a pipe.

Q: But my home has wood lath plaster walls.

A: That’s ok – This type of wall can be carefully cut, or instead, we can mount your inlet valves in the baseboard or floor.

Q: What if I live in a Condo or it is impossible to exhaust a central vacuum unit through my wall?

A: VACUFLO offers a filtered cyclonic vacuum unit, which has an optional exhaust. It utilizes a cartridge filter, which must be periodically cleaned or changed. This filter captures the small dust particles, which would normally be exhausted to the exterior of your home.

Q: Do I have to drag the hose and accessories up and down our steps?

A: Not at all, you can purchase additional hoses and accessories; they can be kept in a convenient closet, taking up minimal room.

Q: Can we vacuum from two spots at the same time?

A: It is best to only vacuum from one location at a time, although, if piped correctly, with 1 system, you can vacuum from two inlets simultaneously. Some homes have multiple systems installed, separating the floors or sides of the home to most efficiently vacuum simultaneously. Remember that the price will be increases significantly with additional piping, units, hoses, and accessories.

Q: I have an existing vacuum system, which is not VACUFLO. The power unit provides plenty of vacuum, but my hoses and accessories are in disrepair; will VACUFLO hoses and accessories work with my system?

A: Most systems are universal, upon further investigation, C.J. Miller should be able to find the proper accessories for your system.

Q: I already have an existing vacuum system, which is not VACUFLO. Will all my hoses and accessories work if I put in a new VACULFO Power unit?

A: Yes, your existing tools will work. The vacuum unit is only providing the suction for the system.

Q: My vacuum system has low suction, what can I do?

A: This may be due to a number of reasons.

1) The motor screen or filter may be clogged. To remedy this, brush the motor screen or filter – this should be done every time you empty your canister.
2) An inlet may be open somewhere in the home. Plug your hose in, partially block the end and walk around the home while it is running to see if you hear any hissing (don’t forget to check the garage.) Possibly a pipe fitting may have come loose and needs to be glued.
3) There may be a blockage in the pipe network. Go to the inlet closest to the unit and see if there is a loss of vacuum at that inlet. If so, the blockage should be between that spot and the vacuum unit. Sometimes using a shop vac at that inlet or running a plumbing snake will remove the clog. If not, it may be necessary to call C.J. Miller for a service call.

Q: My system seems ok – will you come out just to go over it?

A:Yes, a standard service call would be issued. This service call would include checking the system for efficiency, recording the vacuum power, cleaning your tools and accessories, and making any recommendations we feel are necessary to have your system running at optimum performance. Our rates start with an initial service charge, which covers travel and the first half hour, following with ½ hour increments after from that point. You would then be added to our database with all your information at hand.
